Flora and Fauna

There are no animals or plants that pose any danger to human life. Around 900 types of fish inhabit the waters surrounding the country; mostly all are edible. There are almost 300 types of birds. It is home to approximately 4,000 varieties of mollusks and almost 7,000 varieties of insects, with the smallest species in the world: the toad (Sminthillus limbatus) and the bee hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae). More than 8,000 species conform the exuberant plant life; half of them are endemic. Marine animal and plant life are considered among the most beautiful and better preserved of the planet, making the waters surrounding the island a sanctuary for scuba divers.
